The provincial government is launching an enhanced road information system.

On Wednesday, officials said travellers will be able to benefit from a new 511 phone service that will provide "up-to-date information on driving conditions."

The system is an updated version of the former highway information system.

By calling 511, Manitobans will be able to get details on provincial road conditions, current weather information and notifications for road and bridge closures, among other information.

Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation started creating the new 511 system in the spring alongside telecommunication service providers operating in the province.

Provincial officials said Manitoba is the first province in western Canada to adopt a 511 type of system. Similar systems are currently available in about 30 states south of the border.

Along with offering information via the 511 phone line, updated information will also continue to be offered online, with a new website featuring an interactive map at www.mb511.ca
