Officers say a man shot in the back of the head in Winnipeg's West End has now died from his injuries.

Darren George was shot on December 7 and left to die in a back lane near the 700 block of Beverley Street. Police said the victim was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Natalie Matinet had to make the difficult decision of whether or not to take her brain-dead son off of life support.

"I never thought I would bury my kid, any of my kids. That's the worst part of it," said Matinet.

Sources told CTV News George was also a member of a Winnipeg street gang.

His mother said her son was getting out and hoped to start a new life. She said she's now questioning if that's the reason he was killed.

"I'm angry that gangs have to do stuff like this just because someone wants to better their life," said Matinet.

George's longtime girlfriend, Frankie Campbell, says she moved to Edmonton two weeks ago, shortly after learning she was pregnant with the couple's first child. She said she made the move to get away from the gang life. Campbell said George was planning to move to Edmonton as well.

"For him to step-up and want to change his life," said Campbell. "That's a lot for any gang member."

Police are still interviewing witnesses in connection with the shooting.

"The main priority right now is to locate the individuals or individual who would be responsible for this crime that's something that we are doing," said Const. Natalie Aitken of the Winnipeg Police Service.

So far, no charges have been laid, but police are speaking with a number of people in connection with this incident.
