Officials with Zellers issued a correction and an apology following an issue with a coupon made available on the company's Facebook page.

The coupon, offered as part of its Festive Finale campaign, originally stated 50 per cent off any item between Dec. 26 and Dec. 31.

On Dec. 29, Zellers said there was a printing error and clarified the coupon was only good for regularly-priced items, not items already on sale.

The retailer's Facebook page was flooded with nearly 600 comments, most of them complaints.

The company, however, said it has posted the correction on its Facebook page, its website and in stores, which is in line with guidelines set out by the Competition Act.

"We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and frustration this has caused our customers," said a company spokesperson in a statement.
