Police have made an arrest in connection with a double murder from 1988 in Texas of a couple from Minnedosa.

Evan Squires, 70, and his wife Wilda, 65, were asleep in their mobile home at a trailer park in Weslaco on Nov. 13, 1988 when they were apparently woken up by a noise.

The couple confronted intruders and were shot dead, said police. No arrests were made at the time.

"It was a sad, sad day…there were a nice couple, a really good couple," said Jan Angus, who was friends with Evan and Wilda.

"Some of our veteran officers were saying that this was something pretty tragic back when they were patrol men and actually on scene so they are definitely excited to get a break in the case," said JP Rodriguez from the Weslaco Police Department.

Police said DNA recovered at the scene was recently linked to a 42-year-old suspect, Arturo Almaguer.

The suspect had been arrested last month in Michigan for a pair of break and enters and police there ran a DNA check while he was in custody.

Investigators are now working to extradite him to Texas to face capital murder charges. If convicted, he could face the death penalty in Texas.
