The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is concerned about what it's calling rising costs for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

"The price keeps going up and up and up," said Colin Craig from the federation. "What I'm hearing from tax-payers is that they're tapped out."

In late December, officials informed the public the museum's building costs are up another $40 million. That increase brings the total cost of the museum to $351 million.

Now, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says that figure excludes the cost of a temporary gallery and theater. That is expected to cost another $6.5 million.

"If it's part of the project, it should have been released with the other information," said Craig. "This is a government-owned museum. It should be accountable to the people of Canada."

Museum officials said it's not a hidden cost. The overall project-budget always excluded completing the theater and temporary gallery spaces. They also say the information is laid out on the museum's website.

"We've always made every effort to communicate where we are in the development of our project," said Angela Cassie, spokesperson for the museum.

The museum said at this point, the focus is to get the building completed and the inaugural exhibits ready for the museum's opening. The temporary gallery and theater will be completed at a later date.

The museum is slated to open in 2014.
