A young boy was found unharmed after the vehicle he was a passenger in was stolen on Wednesday, said police.

Around 5 p.m. on Jan. 10, a woman went to pick up her daughter in the first 100 block of Park Place East in South Tuxedo.

The woman stepped out of the vehicle and walked up to a residence. Her son was in the back seat and the keys were in the ignition.

While walking to the front of the residence, the woman turned back and spotted a man speeding off in her 2011 Acura MDX with her son inside it, said police.

She tried to chase after it on foot but the vehicle left at high speed.

"I can only imagine what was going through the mind of the mother at this time – an incredible terrifying ordeal for her," said Const. Jason Michalyshen from Winnipeg police.

The frantic mother found the car less than a block away. The doors were open and her young son was no longer inside the SUV.

Neighbours had found the young boy walking outside of the vehicle. They took him in and cared for him until help arrived.

The woman's son was unharmed and the two were quickly reunited.

Police said the woman's purse had been stolen from the vehicle.

Prior to the incident, the car thief suspect was spotted riding as a passenger in a red or burgundy sport utility vehicle.

He is described as a white male, about 20 years old, dark short hair, wearing dark clothing.

Anyone with information on the suspect or incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-2877, or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.

Police also reminded the public about the dangers of warming up vehicles, and reminded that leaving them unattended can pose opportunities for thieves.

"A friendly reminder to all members of the public – there is no question, I think, this makes us all realize only a short period of time is required," said Michalyshen.
