Jheruel Mananghaya pleaded guilty in court Tuesday to second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Darren Walsh.

Walsh, 24, was standing at a Main Street bus stop in Winnipeg on July 4, 2010 when he was gunned down.

Walsh's girlfriend and her 12-year-old child witnessed the killing.

Mananghaya admitted to taking a gun out of a weed-wacker box and shooting the victim twice.

In court, the defence's lawyers tried to argue the accused suffers from a mental illness, hearing voices that lead to the killing.

But the judge did not buy it and neither did the victim's family.

The judge decided the 26-year-old Mananghaya won't be eligible for parole for 12 years, which is two more years than the minimum.

Walsh's mother sobbed as she read her victim impact statement. "It has taken everything of me everyday to pick up the pieces," she said.
