Officers have charged a victim's roommate in connection with a gruesome homicide.

Police were called to a back alley near the 100 block of Donald Street on Feb. 20.

Nearby restaurant employees reported seeing severed hands in a dumpster in the area.

Officers responded and determined a homicide had taken place.

Police said the victim has been identified as Darren Robert Monias, 42, of Winnipeg.

The investigation led police to the 200 block of Thomas Berry Street, near Traverse Avenue, in St. Boniface where a suspect, who is a roommate of the victim, was taken into custody.

Officers said Emery Miles McLeod, 38, of Winnipeg has been charged with second-degree murder.

"It does not appear we are seeking any other individuals for any other charges regarding this incident at this time," said Const. Natalie Aitken from Winnipeg police.

An autopsy will be held to determine how Monias died.

Officers remained on scene Wednesday at the St. Boniface apartment building.
