A Manitoban has pleaded guilty for a snowmobile crash that killed a pedestrian in Winnipeg.

In January 2011, Ken Stammers died after being hit by a snowmobile in a field near his Transcona home.

The snowmobiler was initially facing a charge of criminal negligence causing death. That was later downgraded to careless operation of a motor vehicle.

In pleading guilty, Shane Hayward was fined $4,000 for the collision. He was 22 at the time of the crash.

The case prompted the city to overhaul its off-road bylaw in Winnipeg.

Two weeks ago, the executive policy committee approved a snowmobile and off-road vehicle ban for all areas within Winnipeg, which could take effect in November if approved by council as a whole.
