The city held a public meeting Saturday, seeking feedback on parking plans for the new Bombers stadium at the University of Manitoba.

The event is part of a series of open houses aimed to get community input on the Investor's Group Field stadium slated to open this summer.

A city advisory committee is hoping to nail down a game-day strategy to deal with traffic congestion, parking and transit in the U of M area on game and event days.

Traffic and planning experts, transit officials, police, emergency services and accessibility advisors have all been consulted by the committee.

John Wintrup with City of Winnipeg Planning Department said the city is encouraging alternate modes of transport to help accomodate the 33,000 people expected on game day.

"We're confident we can target and hit 15 percent of the people taking transit," Wintrup said. "We're setting aside at the start right now 600 bicycle parking stalls. That includes bike valet parking."

The city has already announced it plans to create a no-parking zone on streets near the stadium on game days and  invalidate existing student and staff parking passes on campus during game days. Both plans were met with criticism from area residents and students.

Other residents are still mulling how they'll get to the stadium on game day. "Right now the way we look at it, I may have to bike because I won't be buying an expensive season ticket at this point so I'm not sure I'll be able to get a parking pass," said Bill Baron, who attended the open house.

The open houses will be held across the city from now until March 8. Officials from the City of Winnipeg, the U of M, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and BBB Inc. will be on hand to answer questions and listen to concerns.

Earlier this week on Feb. 29, the U of M hosted its own open house to get feedback from students and staff. The university has approximately 6,400 parking spots.
