Staff and students at Kelvin High School are coming to terms with a brawl that sent four teens to hospital.

A group of teens arrived at the school on Kingsway with weapons and targeted a specific group of teens, police said.

Multiple vehicles were also damaged in the melee. Winnipeg police said the event stemmed from an on-going dispute between the two groups.

Carmen Younger, a student at Kelvin, is still shaken from the incident. "My sister's in Grade 9, so the fact that kids her age are involved… it's terrifying."

Students have said as many as eight students were involved and some had weapons. Winnipeg police confirmed suspects brought knives, baseball bats and a pellet gun to the brawl. Students have said they believe the fight was drug-related but that has yet to be confirmed.

Police now say four students, aged 14 to 18, who were involved in the fight were taken to hospital. The students were rolled out on stretchers and into ambulances after the incident.

A fifth teen was taken to hospital with unrelated health issues. They have all since been released.

"We did have a number of people come forward, and I can tell you that the possibility exists that there are other victims," said Winnipeg police Const. Natalie Aitken.

Kelvin's principal sent a letter to parents Friday about the incident. "Upon learning about the incident, school staff immediately took steps to ensure the safety of our student population. The school went into a 'lockout,' " wrote principal Jim Brown.

Rita Hildahl, the chair of the Winnipeg School Division said safety is the number one priority of the division, and she's satisfied with the response.

"We have a crisis response plan and everything worked out beautifully," said Hildahl, adding the response plan is reviewed annually.

No formal charges have been laid, but Winnipeg police said they arrested three males in connection with the brawl Thursday.

Officers continue to investigate, and ask anyone with information to contact detectives at 986-2877 or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.

There were no classes scheduled at Kelvin High School Friday, due to a division-wide inservice. Classes are scheduled to resume at the school on Monday.
