A Fort Alexander nurse convicted of beating two young children will not serve jail time and will continue to work as a nurse.

Donald Hildebrand was given a six-month conditional sentence Wednesday for assaulting his ex-wife's two young sons 20 years ago.

Hildebrand pleaded guilty to assaulting the boys as punishment for what he considered bad behaviour.

The judge told the court he believed Hildebrand was rehabilitated.

The victims' mother, Jacqueline Johnston, wanted Hildebrand to serve time.

"It's been 20 years of horrible, horrible memories. I do not want another child to go through this. This man displays predatory behavior," said Johnston.

Hildebrand will continue to work as a nurse despite pleading guilty to the charges. The College of Registered Nurses told CTV News it has placed conditions on Hildebrand, which include not providing care to anyone under 18.
