Despite bad weather over 2,500 people made it out to run a half-marathon for charity Sunday morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service held its annual half-marathon and relay race Sunday in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Rain and overcast skies put a chill over runners before they headed out for the run, which began at Assiniboine Park. A Canadian Forces C130 flew overhead to mark the start of the race.

A number of Winnipeg police officers participated in the run.

"There's about 35 to 40 members that have come along, and they're all running," said Carol Ferguson, an organizer of the race with the Winnipeg Police Service. "Some of them have never ran in a half-marathon before."

Police Chief Keith McCaskill and his wife were on hand to cheer on participants. "We ran for the last four years, and this year we're helping the volunteers," said McCaskill.

McCaskill handed out water and helped volunteers during the race. "It makes me feel great. Our people have put this all together," he said.

The Canadian Cancer Society also hosted a by-donation pancake breakfast at the duck pond in Assiniboine Park at the conclusion of the marathon.

The run is now in its eighth year and has raised over $580,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Ferguson said she anticipates raising over $100,000 from the run this year.

"I'm truly hoping it's going to be closer to the $120,000 for this year's event," Ferguson said.
