Alberta-based company Canalta Hotels said it's no longer interested in building a water park at The Forks.

In April, city council decided to delay a vote on a possible $7-million subsidy for the park.

A number of councillors said more information was needed before voting on a subsidy for the project, calling for design and site plans.

The park was expected to cost $75 million to build.

Canalta sent a letter to the city dated May 11 saying it's withdrawing its interest in building the park at The Forks.

"Council passed a motion that requires additional cost over and above what we have already incurred without knowing if any design we propose might be approved. We must have a reasonable expectation of success before incurring further costs, which we do not have. We are disappointed but respect Council's right to make the decisions they make," said Canalta CEO Cam Christianson in a letter to city hall.

Coun. Justin Swandel (St. Norbert) said it's unlikely now that council would be able to persuade Canalta to reconsider.

"You know, read the letter – it's fairly strong, straightforward. My sense is it wouldn't be successful, said Swandel, who had voiced support for the project.

Coun. Dan Vandal (St. Boniface) said the request from city council for more information before voting was reasonable.

"The fact that they're not willing to spend $20,000, $30,000 for some renderings and drawings does validate that this was perhaps not the best use for this particular site," said Vandal.

He said if council does continue to pursue plans for a water park, it needs to do a better job of consulting with Winnipeggers first.
