WINNIPEG - The Manitoba government is planning to give municipalities more power to regulate bicycle traffic.

A bill now before the legislature would let local governments designate bicycle pathways and set down rules for where cyclists can go.

Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux says the aim is not to restrict cyclists, but to create more areas where they can travel safely.

Lemieux says municipalities would be able to make more bylaws governing cyclists, because they are in a better position than the province to know their roads.
