The Canadian Forces has cancelled it's scheduled Snowbirds display for the Victoria Day long weekend, citing safety concerns.

A deluge of rain and dark clouds swept over Winnipeg Friday night and held strong Saturday, forcing the Canadian Forces Snowbirds to cancel their planned flight.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds were set to perform above The Forks at 3 p.m. to celebrate the Victoria Day weekend.

The show would have contained a 30-minute choreographed flight set to music for public viewing. A number of different maneuvers and nine-plane formations were to be showcased at the event.

Officials said the Snowbirds will head back to Regina, and there won't be an alternate performing offered.

Festivities are expected to continue Sunday and Monday with music, dance and martial arts demonstrations.
