A Winnipeg man was handed jail time Wednesday morning for his role in a deadly hit and run in 2009.

Roop Singh Dhaliwal was given a sentence of 12 months for failing to stop at the scene of an accident and six months for operating a vehicle under a driving ban. Both sentences are to be served concurrently.

Dhaliwal pleaded guilty for causing the death of 19-year-old Melissa Ranville.

Ranville was hit by a car and killed while walking in the 500 block of Sheppard Street.

The victim's family said the sentence isn't long enough.

The judge said although the seriousness of the offence deserved jail time, there was no evidence of alcohol or speed that night.

When released from jail, Dhaliwal will be on probation for a year.

Dhaliwal could still be deported back to Pakistan. His laywer, Sheldon Pinx, says that situation will be reviewed once his sentence is served.
